Howdy, folks,

As per Lyle's suggestion, since my workweek next week gets a tad hectic, I am posting the artwork for the proof-of-concept comic (a la .swf) that I was working on. I'll edit this post to update it when new pages are complete, and I'll put a link to the final, self-printing edition (we still have to reconcile some printer differences and A4/Letter quirks, but it's promising). Four pages are done, so far (one full duplex, digest-folded page total).

That's all so far. Special thanks to fonthead for the Orion font.

jason

This is absolutely wicked, Jason, big thanks for putting in the effort. At this stage, this is precisely what the project needs: a focus for all our ideas. I can't wait to try out the final file.

Graphically, the comic is a good example of the raster->vector conversion effect. I'm assuming you drew it by hand, then scanned it, then used Flash's bitmap-tracer? It's good for the artists to see how broad the visual style will have to be to prevent its suffering from the vectorisation.

As for the comic itself, you're certainly tipping your hat to Mr McCloud...

It's looking good Jason. I've printed out all four pages so far, double sided, on one piece of paper, and it looks even better than it does on screen. (If only I could get the fold right, hope we can sort that out).

I get all excited in the pit of my stomach when I see physical representations of the Lo-Fi project. It is only by physically 'making this happen' that we will be able to make this happen'

Also, as far as vectorising goes, everybody should work in the medium they feel most comfortable in and not worry cramping style so it vectorises well.

If art comes from the artist bitmapped, either from a paint program or a scan, it will stay bitmapped, right the way through the production process and into the final book.

Cheers
Lyle

Great job Jason! My first thought when reading this is it would be good to have on the web site. A great visual to what we are about. I will try to print like Lyle and see if I have better luck with folding it.

Not trying to be a wank, just contributing to perfection:

page 7: "newstands" should be "newsstands."

Sorry, I spell-check stuff almost unconsciously.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with the nose. I meant the chin. But who cares...?

Page 6 is now up. I should really be asleep instead. Haven't drawn for this comic much because I've been working on JC!'s flyer and rstevens' Indie Rock Pete miniseries (which may actually see publication by the end of the year...), as well as the travails of real life.

In the wake of the past week, I needed some art catharsis. The comic (as you can see) is more or less done. Please feel free to critique or suggest changes.

In a couple weeks I'll get around to turning it into the self-printing .swf it always wanted to be.
